Sweet Home Sacramento

So, I’m back home to soak up my last days of summer before school starts. I’ve missed Sacramento so so much! I know that everyone always talks about how the weather in San Diego is so beautiful and ideal, but personally, I think that Sac has the best weather, ever! In San Diego It’s always so humid and sweaty… but when I’m home, I love the warm air and dry heat. It was 107 degrees yesterday, but it felt like a San Diego 75! Bottom line, I love home.

Another thing I absolutely love about being home is that I spend all day with my grandparents. Every day while my mom dad & sister are at work, I go out with Po po & Gung gung to lunch. Yesterday, we went to their usual spot for AMAZING Chinese food with one of their really good old friends. It was so interesting because they started talking about back in the day when things were way different than they are now. I always knew that my grandparents and great-grandparents had to sacrifice a lot for my family, and I knew that their lives weren’t exactly easy, but very rarely do I ever get to hear stories about their childhood.

My grandpa fought for the army in WW2 and when he was home on leave, he and his friends decided to go ice skating. Fully dressed in his uniform, he goes to the ice skating rink and the guy at the counter turns him away because he’s Chinese. Some other white soldiers, who saw what was going on from inside, came out and tried to reason with the guy. In the end, he allowed my grandpa to go inside to watch everyone else skate.

My grandma grew up in New York City where pools are very rare, so having the privilege to go to a pool was a real treat. When she was about 11 she sold the most girl scout cookies in her troop, about 100 boxes, so as a reward her troop leader took all the girls out to a private club pool. As all the little girls made their way into the pool area, the security stopped my grandma and wouldn’t let her in. The troop leader actually asked my grandma if she would mind sitting out, and she ended up watching the rest of the girls from the other side of the fence.

It’s so easy to overlook all of the small things in life that we should be grateful for. Being home this week and spending time with family has really helped me clear my head and open my eyes to remind me how fortunate I am to have what I have and know the people I’ve been blessed to know.

I’ll miss you, Sacramento! See you Thanksgiving break :)
